The oceans are our planet’s lungs. They absorb around 30% of the carbon dioxide humans produce, and so soften the impacts of global warming.<\/i><\/p>\n

World Oceans Day was marked on 8 June. At CMI Business School we see it as a date for remembering how important their conservation is, and the devastating consequences of human activity upon them, which make policies for the sustainable management of the seas urgently necessary.<\/p>\n

The oceans are the world’s largest source of protein, and more than three billion people depend on marine and coastal biodiversity for their livelihoods, thanks to the great quantity of food and medicine it provides.<\/p>\n

The United Nations event for World Oceans Day<\/h3>\n

The United Nations held an online event to mark the day and to create space for debate about how the oceans might be protected. \u201cInnovation for a sustainable ocean<\/a>\u201d was its title, and it looked at innovations in technology, systems infrastructure, resource management, consumer products, finance and scientific exploration. The aim was to examine the potential impacts of those innovations, the resources they would need and, finally, how likely they are to become solutions that last.<\/p>\n

At CMI we therefore argue for building corporate social responsibility into the centre of business operations, so as to safeguard the responsible treatment of people and of the environment. We also carry out and encourage research, development and innovation, with a view to generating scientific and technological knowledge at the forefront of the field and aligned with what society and the planet require.<\/p>\n

Achieving alternative business models that protect the planet is possible, but it takes leaders who are trained and convinced of the need to place CSR and sustainability at the heart of business activity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
