Its origins go back to 1970, when the American senator Gaylord Nelson established the day to build a shared awareness of the problems of pollution and overpopulation, of conserving biodiversity and much else. Environmental campaigners the world over use the occasion to pay tribute to the planet and to reaffirm their commitment to caring for its ecosystems.

“This day should find us changed. It is a sad thing to see the oceans filling with ever more plastic, forest fires becoming a tradition, the devastating effects of climate change and other catastrophic consequences that are a reality we could not have imagined only a few years ago. We need to act differently, and the change has to begin with us,” said Rafael García, CMI’s founding president.

“We can all take small actions to look after the environment, and reducing our carbon footprint is one of the main ones to aim at. This year’s Earth Day theme calls on us to act boldly, and the best moment to be socially responsible people is now,” said Nilsa Mármol, the institution’s vice-president and co-founder.

The directors encouraged all staff to build environmentally healthy habits into their daily routine over the long term — not as a one-day activity, but as part of how they live.

Dr Álvaro Montoya, who teaches at CMI, said of the occasion: “Many organisations with commercial interests use this day to put a green label on their products and make their campaigns pay, and that is definitely a problem. As individuals we need to bring conscious judgement to our decisions; we have to understand our everyday activities as political decisions and, in that way, change the trends in the market.
