{"id":21671,"date":"2025-12-03T11:06:27","date_gmt":"2025-12-03T10:06:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cmi.es\/cmi-marks-international-working-womens-day\/"},"modified":"2025-12-03T11:06:27","modified_gmt":"2025-12-03T10:06:27","slug":"cmi-marks-international-working-womens-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cmi.es\/en\/cmi-marks-international-working-womens-day\/","title":{"rendered":"CMI marks International Working Women&#8217;s Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i>On this day of protest, the business school, committed to gender equality, announces the launch of its Equality Plan to set an example in promoting non-discrimination among its members.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>CMI Business School recognises the importance of this day in honouring women&#8217;s struggle for their place in society, for their emancipation, and thereby for the building of a fairer, more equitable and more inclusive world. It therefore reaffirms its commitment to that struggle by announcing the publication and implementation of a set of measures brought together in an Equality Plan, to promote equal treatment and equal opportunity for everyone at the Institute without discrimination on grounds of gender.<\/p>\n<p><b>A little history<\/b><\/p>\n<p>In 1910, at the Second International Conference of Socialist Women held in Copenhagen, the German leader Clara Zetkin proposed marking a \u201cWorking Women&#8217;s Day\u201d, reiterating the call for women&#8217;s suffrage. The proposal was accepted unanimously and began to be observed in Europe the following year.<\/p>\n<p>Although the women&#8217;s rights advocates did not set a specific date at the Denmark conference, they did ask that it be commemorated in March, since it was in that month in 1857 that textile workers in New York held historic demonstrations against miserable working conditions and against child labour.<\/p>\n<p>The UN formally established the date in 1975.<\/p>\n<p><b>SDG 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Sustainable Development Goal 5 is one of the 17 goals set out by the United Nations in 2015. It focuses on empowering women and girls in order to end gender inequality, and so to avoid the social stagnation that inequality brings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGender equality is not only a fundamental human right, but a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world,\u201d the United Nations explains in the founding document.<\/p>\n<p>CMI takes up this SDG and commits to it by maintaining gender parity in its leadership and a teaching and administrative team that is 54% women.<\/p>\n<p><b>CMI&#8217;s Equality Plan<\/b><\/p>\n<p>To mark this day, CMI announces the publication and implementation of an equality programme with the following aims:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To spread good practice in guaranteeing and promoting equal opportunity.<\/li>\n<li>To secure the right to equal treatment, equal working conditions and equal professional development.<\/li>\n<li>To prevent any expression of discrimination in internal promotion and recruitment within the organisation, so as to achieve a merit-based and balanced representation among staff.<\/li>\n<li>To prevent any situation of harassment or discrimination, whatever its origin, by putting in place a code of conduct that protects everyone in the organisation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Gender violence in Spain<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Spain has recorded 12 murders through gender violence so far this year, and 45 in 2020, bringing the total to 1,080 cases since 2003, when the country began compiling these figures.<\/p>\n<p>Behind every number there is a woman, a story and a murderer. Let us raise awareness of the urgent need to carry on this fight and build a better world together.<\/p>\n<p>We would remind readers that the telephone number 016 offers free advice on the resources available and on the rights of victims of gender violence, as well as legal advice from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day of the week, with support in 52 languages and a service adapted for people with disabilities. (Source: the Spanish Ministry of Equality&#8217;s Government Delegation against Gender Violence.)<\/p>\n<p><b>Some global figures<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In 18 countries, husbands can legally prevent their wives from working; in 39 countries, daughters and sons do not have equal inheritance rights; and in 49 countries there are no laws protecting women from domestic violence.<\/li>\n<li>One in five women and girls, including 19% of women and girls aged 15 to 49, have experienced physical and\/or sexual violence at the hands of an intimate partner in the past 12 months. Yet in 49 countries there are no laws specifically protecting women against such violence.<\/li>\n<li>While women have made significant gains in taking up political office around the world, their representation in national parliaments, at 23.7%, is still far from parity.<\/li>\n<li>Only 52% of women who are married or in a union freely make their own decisions about sexual relations, contraceptive use and health care.
