{"id":21715,"date":"2025-12-03T11:08:27","date_gmt":"2025-12-03T10:08:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cmi.es\/engineers-soft-skills-specialist-training\/"},"modified":"2025-12-03T11:08:27","modified_gmt":"2025-12-03T10:08:27","slug":"engineers-soft-skills-specialist-training","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cmi.es\/en\/engineers-soft-skills-specialist-training\/","title":{"rendered":"Engineers with an eye on the future: why soft skills and specialist training matter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In 2001 a group of distinguished engineering professors at MIT (the Massachusetts Institute of Technology) asked themselves: \u201c<strong>What does the world expect and demand of an engineer?<\/strong>\u201d Their conclusion was this:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Engineering professionals must be able to tackle ill-defined problems, to practise defining tasks and diagnosing faults, to tolerate ambiguity and to work amid uncertainty. To find their way in today&#8217;s world, they must know how to marshal evidence into a rational proposition, describe the costs and benefits of one option against another, and communicate those ideas to others. They must be able to draw on a range of resources, particularly new computing tools, and to judge which tools suit each task they face. They must be capable of interdisciplinary work, in teams with people whose views differ from their own, and of understanding the non-technical forces that weigh heavily on engineers&#8217; decisions. They must be prepared to keep learning throughout their working lives. And they must have a sense of ethics, recognising the legitimising role of standards and codes of conduct.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Engineers have long been thought of as the professionals with a solid grounding in mathematics, science and technology. In working life today, though, technical skills alone are no guarantee of success.<\/p>\n<p>Soft skills \u2014 communication, negotiation, teamwork, time management, analytical thinking and problem-solving \u2014 have become competences valued more and more highly in engineering.<\/p>\n<h2>Why do soft skills matter so much?<\/h2>\n<p>Soft skills, also known as interpersonal or social skills, are the ones that allow us to work effectively with other people. They include communication, collaboration, leadership, problem-solving, creativity and adaptability, among others.<\/p>\n<p>At CMI Business School we have drawn up a list of the 12 soft skills every engineer should develop to succeed in their career.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"525\" src=\"https:\/\/cmi.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/12-Habilidades-de-un-ingeniero-.png.webp\" alt=\"The 12 soft skills every engineer should develop\" \/><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Decision-making.<\/strong> Being able to take informed, sensible decisions, weighing their consequences and their impact.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Commitment.<\/strong> The capacity to persevere and see any task through \u2014 an essential quality in an engineer. Commitment is what allows them to put in the extra effort when it is needed, stay motivated, and come back to the work with fresh energy each day.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Strategic thinking.<\/strong> This makes it possible to approach projects with a long view, building strategies that move them towards their goals while the day-to-day work is managed. It reflects an analytical cast of mind and a results-oriented approach.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Interpersonal communication.<\/strong> Communication skills, spoken and written alike, are highly valued in every workplace. Being able to express ideas, opinions, projects and obstacles clearly and precisely is essential to taking decisions as a team.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Flexibility.<\/strong> The capacity to adapt to new circumstances and face challenges with a positive attitude is the mark of flexibility. Those who are comfortable stepping outside their comfort zone and meeting difficulties with resilience are an asset to any organisation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Time management.<\/strong> The capacity to prioritise the most important and urgent tasks, while delegating the less urgent ones or giving them less time, is essential to working efficiently and in an organised way.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Leadership.<\/strong> The ability to lead and to motivate others to give their best is highly prized by employers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Creativity, innovation and problem-solving.<\/strong> Creativity makes it possible to generate innovative ideas that solve problems. Efficient, creative solutions are of great value to any organisation and help an engineer stand out.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Teamwork.<\/strong> Effective collaboration is fundamental to almost every engineering project. Teamwork calls for communicating effectively, sharing information as needed and respecting differing points of view.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Managing risk, change and crisis.<\/strong> The capacity to manage risk, change and crisis has become a fundamental skill for engineers. Professionals have to identify, analyse and respond to the various challenges that can affect an organisation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Negotiation skills.<\/strong> These are fundamental for engineers, who have to negotiate with suppliers, contractors and internal teams. A good negotiator looks for outcomes that benefit every party and builds relationships of trust throughout.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Research and analysis skills.<\/strong> A capable engineer knows how to carry out research efficiently and to analyse the findings to draw meaningful conclusions.
