Among its best-known documents are the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Global Compact and the <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/sdgs.un.org\/2030agenda\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i>2030 Agenda<\/i><\/a><i>, which established the <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/sustainable-development-goals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i>17 Sustainable Development Goals<\/i><\/a><i> (SDGs).<\/i><\/p>\n<p>On 24 October the United Nations marks 75 years since the Charter of the United Nations \u2014 the institution&#8217;s founding document, signed in 1945 \u2014 came into force. The day has been celebrated since 1948 as a reminder of why the organisation matters. It was in 1971 that the General Assembly recommended member states observe it as a public holiday.<\/p>\n<p><b>Did you know?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>The UN pursues four fundamental purposes:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To maintain international peace and security;<\/li>\n<li>to develop friendly relations among nations;<\/li>\n<li>to achieve international cooperation in solving international problems; and<\/li>\n<li>to promote respect for human rights.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Regional headquarters<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The UN has three regional headquarters: one in Geneva, Switzerland, opened in 1946; another in Vienna, Austria, in 1980; and one in Nairobi, Kenya, which began operating in 2011. These offices help represent the organisation&#8217;s interests and facilitate diplomatic activity from different points around the globe.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>The Universal Declaration of Human Rights<\/b><\/p>\n<p>This document, signed on 10 December 1948, was the first to set out the fundamental human rights to be protected the world over. It is one of the milestones in the history of human rights, and has been translated into more than 500 languages.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>The Global Compact<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The Global Compact was, and remains, an initiative whose purpose is to involve not only governments but private companies \u2014 to draw them into playing a more active part in achieving a more sustainable world. Launched in 1999, and with more than 13,000 signatory organisations from 170 countries, it has become the largest voluntary corporate social responsibility initiative in the world.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>The Sustainable Development Goals<\/b><\/p>\n<p>With the strategic objectives for a more sustainable world already established in the Global Compact, the 2030 Agenda was created in 2015, defining 17 Sustainable Development Goals which range from combating climate change to equality for women and access to quality education. <a href=\"https:\/\/cmi.es\/cmi-presenta-su-memoria-de-sostenibilidad-2017-2019\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Since its foundation in 2017, CMI Business School has contributed to 9 of the 17 SDGs agreed by world leaders.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>The first woman in command<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The first woman to hold a senior post in the organisation was the Canadian diplomat Louise Fr\u00e9chette. She was appointed Deputy Secretary-General in 1999 and held the post until 2007.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>The longest speech<\/b><\/p>\n<p>On 23 January 1957 India&#8217;s representative V. K. Krishna Menon defended India&#8217;s position on Kashmir for five hours \u2014 the longest speech in the history of the United Nations.
