Dr Totti Könnölä, CEO of Insight Foresight Institute, is an executive and advisor in the fields of innovation, entrepreneurship and digitalisation to transform society towards sustainability. He has coordinated numerous foresight, evaluation and decision-making projects in collaboration with industry managers, research directors, policymakers and other stakeholders.
Throughout his professional career, he has gained experience in Europe and the Americas in management, research and advisory roles, particularly in: i) the European Commission’s JRC-IPTS and the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT); ii) universities and research and technology organisations such as IE Business School, VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, Aalto University, Comillas Pontifical University (ICAI) and ESERP Business School; and iii) venture capital firms and companies including Insight Foresight Institute, eGauss Business Holding I+T, Impetu Solutions, Gaia Group and Stora Enso.
As founder and CEO of two consulting firms (previously Impetu Solutions and currently Insight Foresight Institute), Könnölä is a passionate promoter of technological and social transformation. He was also highly involved in the development of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) and played a key role in the development of European foresight systems and R&D&I policy benchmarking at the European Commission (JRC) (e.g. Country Correspondent for Finland). Könnölä is a recognised international advisor, particularly among EU Member States and associated countries, as well as OECD countries. He has participated in several international working groups and carried out numerous activities to develop foresight and strategic policy intelligence. He is a member of “Los 100 de Cotec”, a network of experts of the Cotec Foundation for Innovation, and serves on the Advisory Board of CARISMA Innovation for Climate Mitigation, FOM Asesoramiento Tecnológico and Sustainability College Bruges.
Könnölä is Associate Professor in business and engineering schools (UPM, UNIR, ESERP, etc.), accredited by MECD (ANECA) as professor at public and private universities. He holds a Dr.Tech and Lic.Tech in Operations Research from the Helsinki University of Technology and an MSc in Environmental Economics from the University of Helsinki. At the University of Manchester (MIoIR), he completed executive education in R&D&I Policy Evaluation. He is a frequent speaker at international conferences and serves as advisor and editor for scientific journals. He is co-author of more than 100 articles and books, including Eco-Innovation: When Competitiveness and Sustainability Shake Hands, published by Palgrave Macmillan and translated into Spanish and Chinese. He also promotes public debate on innovation through contributions to newspapers and professional magazines.
